SOUTH
OAKLAND INTER CHURCH ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONS!!!
The Huntington Woods Lutheran Church Mens' softball
team was last year's (2000 season) SOICAA tournament champion. After achieving
a 9-and-3 record during the regular season, the mens' team won a double-elimination
play-off with four straight victories. The championship game ended with
a 17 to 11 triumph over Troy United 1st Methodist Church. Although the
mens' team found itself playing short-handed early in the season, and
even had to forfeit one game, by the end of the season the team really
came together both offensively and defensively. When the tournament was
over, the HWLC team had remained undefeated while every other team had
two losses. The championship game was exciting and had lots of fans on
both sides cheering their team on. The final game featured an "all-Seidl"
infield: Todd at shortstop, Brent at 2nd and Gary Churchill at 3rd base.
This season Kurt (Jackhammer) Howell pitched every pitch of every inning
of every game except one, and he also was our designated "trash-talker".
Any ball hit anywhere near left-fielder Mike Gunn resulted in an "out"
for the other team. Scott Kube demonstrated leadership in the outfield
and at the plate. Jim Broecker sparked the team by going 4-for-4 at the
plate, and also turned in a defensive gem in the outfield. Tony Davis
was a welcome new addition to the team. First-baseman John Hoover and
catcher Alan Hahn rounded out our championship team. Unfortunately, Greg
Gerfen had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list just before game time.
The team was presented with a championship trophy after the game, and
that trophy will be on display in the church lounge.
